A young Chinese woman overcomes tremendous obstacles; an abusive father, Japanese occupation, Chinese civil war, and a harrowing journey to Taiwan and then America, to become a powerful and influential voice for Chinese Americans and women in US society. Lily Lee Chen was among the first wave of Chinese students to study at American universities. Her dedication to helping immigrants and women in need, led to her becoming the first Chinese American woman to be the Mayor of a US city.
